Sturgeon County has several beautiful municipalities. Start here for a short general insight on each one.

Mowing Operations Update

Mowing Operations Update

Sturgeon County’s Vegetation Management Standards Policy ensures that minimum standards are maintained on all Sturgeon County owned lands. In average years, these minimums are often exceeded as set forth in the chart below:

Changes in 2020 due to COVID

To accommodate the service reductions due to COVID-19, the Ag Services department canceled hiring 13 seasonal positions some of which impact annual mowing. To accommodate this reduction, the Sturgeon County focused on meeting minimum mowing service levels and reducing or eliminating trimming around obstacles which is a highly labour-intensive activity. This also delayed our response time to complaints from residents.

Current status of mowing

Sturgeon County is on pace to meet the minimum mowing standards per season on all Type 1, 2, and 3 areas, as well as the paved/hard-surface roads.

In addition to the service reductions, the wet weather has had an impact on our mowing operations. This meant that the roadside mowing of gravel-surfaced roads was not started until the week of July 20.

Tractor/rotary mower units are currently working from the east side of the County, to the west. As of July 28, mowers have completed gravel roads South of Hwy 643 and East of Hwy 28a and have moved across Hwy 28a (mowing west). North mowers working on gravel roads North of Hwy 643 and East of Hwy 28 and, as of July 28, are mowing in the Redwater area.

Moving forward

We are looking at options for the remainder of the mowing season, particularly for the ditches of the gravel roads by contracting resources to increase mowing events.
