Métis flag raised at Sturgeon County Centre
Sturgeon County, AB: On November 15, 2019, a Flag Raising Ceremony was held in honour of Métis Week at Sturgeon County Centre.
It is the first time the flag — a white infinity symbol on a blue background — has been raised at Sturgeon County.
“We honour the Métis people and the important role the Métis people played in the history of Sturgeon County, the province and the country.” said Mayor, Alanna Hnatiw.
Guests and Council joined together to commemorate this important event with Métis Elder Myrtle Calahasin, Mr. Gary Gagnon, Vice President of Metis Nation Alberta Region 4, Veteran, Mr. John McDonald, and Mr. Shane Getson, MLA for Lac Ste. Anne-Parkland was also in attendance.
The ceremony included an opening prayer, a brief history of the Métis flag followed by Veteran McDonald raising the flag while the anthem played on. Mayor Hnatiw presented gifts and thanks on behalf of Sturgeon County to the special guests and all gathered for refreshments indoors after the event.
